Quick Post: Vizzi Truck Launches New Fall Menu

It will be interesting to see over time how gourmet food trucks mirror traditional brick and mortar restaurants.  One example is the seasonal menu.  Like many gourmet restaurants this time of year, Vizzi Truck is launching a fall version of their menu.  There will continue to be some customer favorites available and there are some new creations that will surely keep people coming back for more.

Vizzi Truck was one of the first LA gourmet food trucks we reviewed back in May.  When it comes to a true four or five star culinary experience Vizzi is on that list.  I really like the fact they have decided to release a seasonal menu.  Not only does it look good but now there are some new entrees to look forward to.

The new menu will be available starting today at South Bay DinDin-A-GoGo (Kmart in Carson).

“Drive Out Hunger” to Help Combat Hunger in the O.C.

Drive Out Hunger Orange County 2010

Saturday Night Foodies Teams Up With Orange County Gourmet Food Trucks and Fellow Food Bloggers to Host Mobile Food Drive Benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank

Saturday Night Foodies has partnered with 20 Orange County Gourmet Food Trucks and other leading food bloggers, to host Drive Out Hunger, the county’s first mobile food drive. The two week food drive will be held from November 7-20, 2010 and will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank.

From the outside, Orange County appears to be a privileged community and yet according to the Second Harvest Food Bank, approximately 615,000 Orange County residents are at risk of going hungry each month. We as a foodie community have the power to bring awareness to the hunger problem taking place in our own backyard and really make a difference. We felt holding a food drive would be a great way give to those less fortunate.

Because the economy has been slow to rebound, donations have been low this year. In turn, the Second Harvest member agencies are reporting an average 35 percent increase in demand for food assistance. We, with the help of the foodie community, want to collect 1,000 pounds of food for the Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County.

Please make sure to bring a food donation when you visit your favorite Gourmet Food Truck or food truck event during the two week food drive.  If you see us around please say hello!

The donations they need most are:

Non-perishable canned goods or dry food*:

  • Canned meats, fish, soup, fruits, vegetables
  • Pasta
  • Hot and cold cereal
  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Rice
  • Beans
  • Peanut butter

Personal care items:

  • Diapers
  • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Toilet paper
  • Soap

* Please no glass containers or expired items.

The participating gourmet food trucks will have collection bins at their food stops from Nov. 7-20, to accept donations: Bakery Truck, Barcelona on the Go, CalbiBBQ, Chomp Chomp NationChunknChip, Crepes Bonaparte, DanDanBBQ, Dogzilla Dogs, Dos Chinos, Greasy WienerKonaiceBC, Lee’s PhillyLomo Arigato, Longboards, Louks, Oh For Sweets Sake, Piaggio on Wheels, Seabirds, Shortstop BBQ, The Burnt Truck, The Lime Truck, The Taco Dawg and Tropical Shave Ice. Find their daily locations via their respective Twitter or Facebook pages.

Kicking Off the 2nd Annual Happy Hour Week at SOL Cocina – Newport Beach

SOL Cocina

Tonight is the beginning of a week dedicated to happy hour, here in Orange County.  As part of the kickoff festivities we were invited to SOL Cocina for tequila tasting provided by Peligroso.  The tequila was paired with from south of the border favors prepared by SOL Cocina’s own Executive Chef Deborah Schneider.

Fresh Fruit Margaritas from Peligroso Tequila

Peligroso prepared fresh fruit margaritas and offered a flight of their three tequilas.  This is the first time we tried their tequila.  I am not a tequila connoisseur but I know what I like.  Over the last couple of years I have grown to really enjoy tequila and the anejo from Peligroso will be added to my growing collection.  All of their tequila is twice distilled which allows you to still taste the agave.  However their anejo is aged for 18 months giving it a nice floral bouquet.  Kim sensed some notes of coconut and I got a slight touch of cinnamon.  Their silver and reposado are worth a try too if you are in the market for something new.

Tonight's Tastings
Hot & Raw Ceviche with Peligroso Silver

The three food pairings fit well.  Served with the Peligroso Silver, the star of this show was the “Hot & Raw Ceviche” which had fresh albacore, lime, tomato, onion, mango, pineapple, orange, cucumber, habanero, cilantro and avocado.  Normally, I am not a fan of fruity “salsas” but this was much more ceviche with a good amount of heat and just a touch of sweetness.

Chipotle Chicken Sopes Paired with Peligroso Reposado

Paired with the Peligroso Reposado, they served a Chipotle Chicken Sopes, which is fresh corn masa, flavored with garlic and ancho chili.  It was topped with roasted chicken with chipotles in adobo & garlic and a spicy cabbage slaw.

Corn, Shrimp & Black Bean Cake with Peligroso Anejo

Finally, with the third and final tequila, the Peligroso Anejo, we enjoyed SOL Cocina’s Corn, Shrimp & Black Bean Cake with white onions, jalapeno, and panko.  This was topped with a salsa of tomatillos, serranos, cilantro, and just a touch of Queso Fresco.

We had a really good time.  SOL Cocina is also starting a Taco Tuesday this week that sounds like it would be worth checking out.  Now all we have to decide is what our next happy hour spot is for this week.

Here is the complete list of Happy Hour Week participants.  We would love to hear about your food adventures as well!  Check out some additional photos from the event.
