First Annual A Taste of Rock Benefiting KOCI 101.5fm May 21

On Saturday, May 21st from 11am to 4pm, three local bands will take the stage to kick off A Taste of Rock to benefit KOCI 101.5fm. With a variety of vendors, music and live radio broadcasting, this event aims to promote local businesses and celebrate the community through classical rock. This event is being hosted by Sweet Style Productions.

Starting from humble beginnings our crew of air and production specialists yearned for a chance to make a mark on the Southern California radio market. No need to wait any longer, the start of some thing good, maybe great, has finally come to the Southern California coast.

The goal of KOCI-LPFM is to provide a distinct and locally-based alternative to the entertainment, in formational and promotional programming that currently exists on the FM band. We will strive for a programming and marketing approach that is more tailored, accessible and community-oriented than those of the larger-scale, more commercially oriented radio stations that currently serve Orange County and Southern California by focusing more exclusively on the core and adjacent communities of our dynamic Orange County central coast service area. We hope to serve as both a source of the best in contemporary musical artistry and entertainment, as well as a valuable community and re gional information resource. We seek to enhance awareness and appreciation of our area’s unique coastal environment and amenities, and provide a variety of promotional and information services on area activities and events, entertainment, public resources, civic issues and community services. To achieve these objectives, KOCI will strive to build creative partnerships with civic leaders, education al and community service organizations and the business community through innovative program ming and promotional activities. Most importantly, we will provide direct financial and promotional support as well as accountability for our own educational / charitable program, “Life Changes for Kids.”

Orange County Food Trucks Invade Las Vegas Competing in the Great Food Truck Race

Last weekend Kim and I went to Las Vegas for another weekend foodie adventure.  This time, the plan was to chase some of the 19 gourmet food trucks roaming the streets of Las Vegas, NV.

As we were driving over the top of the hill and finally setting our eyes on Vegas, Kim started to search twitter for where our first stop was going to be.  While doing so, she came across a tweet from Slider Truck, a great food truck which we had tried on a prior visit.  They were tweeting about a Food Network filming that was happening the next day with special guest trucks from the OC.  Needless to say we could not pass up the opportunity to check it out.  We followed @SliderTruck most of the night and the next day to see if we could glean more.  Both the Lime Truck and Seabirds truck were going to be at the Slidin’ Thru headquarters.

The Lime Turck and Slider Truck

Turns out the Food Network was taping a segment for the Great Food Truck Race Season 2.  I’m not sure what the challenge was but both @SeabirdsTruck and @theLimeTruck were teamed up with the Slider Truck for a fun foodie evening.

The Lime Truck - Great Food Truck Race Las Vegas Feast

As always Chef Jason from the Lime Truck was killing it with an amazing menu, which included arrogant mussels, crab and scallop ceviche, Ahi Poke and much more.  The Seabirds truck was knocking out its fresh vegetarian and vegan fare. We made sure to do our “OC” duty and supported both trucks and got to eat some delicious grub.

Here are some photos from the event:

Seabirds Truck - Just Arrived
The Lime Truck - Ahi Tuna Poke with Blood Orange Segments
Seabirds Truck - Avocado Tacos
The Lime Truck - Mushroom Trip Poutine with Cheese Curds
Seabirds Truck - Black & White Fries with Seabirds Sauce
The Lime Truck - Arrogant Mussels

I cannot wait to see what happens when the show airs later this year.  We hope Seabirds and the Lime Truck can battle it out in the finals!

One Amazing Meal and Experience – The Bazaar by José Andrés

Chef José Andrés' The Bazaar at the SLS Hotel Beverly Hills

Last November, Kim surprised me with a dinner at the Bazaar in Beverly Hills for my birthday.  Prior to visiting the Bazaar I didn’t know much about Chef Jose Andres but now I am a fan.  Located in the SLS hotel, the Spanish-born chef known for his culinary skill in molecular gastronomy, offers both traditional tapas  and those with a unique twist in this upscale restaurant.

Great View of the Kitchen

The Bazaar is made up of several distinct seating areas, which are eclectically and individually decorated.  We had the opportunity to enjoy Rojo Y Blanca and the Patisserie.  From the moment we walked in to the time we left, the experience was outstanding.  Much had to do with our server Jorge who made sure everything was beyond expectations.  He took the time to explain the dishes we were eating and to make sure things were paired up nicely.

Barramundi with Black Garlic and Scallions

Why would he need to pair up the dishes?  The Bazaar designs its menu around tapas-style dishes you can share. This allows you to have a variety of small plates and taste many flavors.  You pick the items you want to enjoy and the server pairs them together based on what you choose, which course and what you are drinking.

“Philly cheesesteak” - Air bread, Cheddar and Wagyu Beef
“Hilly cheesesteak” - Air bread, Cheddar and Mushrooms

We went a little crazy because we wanted to try everything, but here are photos of some of our favorites..  There was nothing that we did not like but our favorite was the Wagyu beef “Philly”.  This is the Bazaar’s interpretation of a Philly cheese steak, is made with air bread, liquid cheddar in the middle and thin slices of Wagyu beef on top. They also had the “Hilly”, a vegetarian option with mushrooms on top.  These are not only big on flavor but also very fun to eat.  Once you bite into the crunchy outer shell the liquid cheddar cheese pours over your tongue giving you the perfect combination of flavors.  They may seem small but these are now on my list of favorite cheesesteaks. We liked these so much we ordered another round.

Foie Gras Floating Island Soup with Corn Nuts

The Foie Gras Floating Island soup was another one we both really enjoyed.  This little cup and saucer was filled with creamy buttery goodness.  When you drink it you get the warmth of the slightly salty soup and the chilled creaminess of the topping.  There are some crushed corn nuts on top that added a third layer of texture.

Seared Chicken and Dates with Mustard Caviar, Spicy Mustard Greens
American Caviar Cones
Passion Fruit Up! and "Salt Air" Margarita

After dinner we were escorted to the Patisserie which was a different open kitchen filled with a delicious dessert bar.  We had a fair sampling of these too.

Dessert Bar
Nitro Coconut Floating Island with Passion Fruit and Vanilla

We had an amazing time.  We look forward to trying the SAAM tasting menu on our next visit.  As a side note Chef Jose Andres is up for a James Beard Award for Outstanding Chef.   We had the opportunity to try two more of his restaurants, China Poblano and Jaleo, at the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Las Vegas. Stay tuned for the reviews!
