First Annual Dessert Oasis – A Quest for the Fountain of Sweet, June 26

Sweet Style Productions hosts the first annual Dessert Oasis-A Quest for the Fountain of Sweets benefiting Divine Choices in Orange County

On Sunday, June 26th from 11am to 4pm, a dessert tasting extravaganza to satisfy every sweet tooth in Orange County will take place at the Sports Club LA in Irvine, CA. Dessert Oasis will benefit Divine Choices that brings together Orange county’s finest dessert makers in the industry for all attendees to taste and bring home treats in a customized bakers box.

With about 75 vendors to include: a variety dessert vendors (chocolate, pastry, sugar, cupcake, etc), food related products, accessories/jewelry, etc. We anticipate to bring the community awareness Divine Choices is seeking for. There will also be a silent auction, raffle, music and fashion show, featuring dessert inspired fashion. Lastly, a dessert contest will take place featuring guest judge Chris Russom of Christopher Garren’s Let Them Eat Cake featured on We tv’s Amazing Wedding Cakes; Annette Starbuck founder of Goodie Girls and Nina Rodecker founder/mompreneur of Tasty Clouds.

Divine Choices is a local nonprofit organization; their vision is to stop sexual abuse and child exploitation within our neighborhoods, communities and around the world. Their mission is to educate and inspire survivors of sexual abuse through awareness-prevention and leadership empowerment training. Divine Choices helps people deal with the past and look to the future with positive expectation.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, almost one-in-four females and one-in-six males are sexually abused by age 18, not including the cases that go unreported. People who were abused in childhood often suffer difficulty establishing healthy relationships, leading productive lives, and fulfilling their full potential to benefit society. Divine Choices helps these sexually abused men and woman from having their negative experiences block them from achieving their full potential.

Waffles Hitting the Streets of LA and the OC – Waffles de Liege

After watching a segment on the Food Network about Wafels & Dinges food truck in New York, I was wondering how long it would take someone to start a waffle truck in LA. It has been a long wait, but finally there is a gourmet food truck serving up real Belgium “Liege” waffles in Southern California. Not only are they making killer fresh waffles but are also pairing it up with some great ice cream and toppings.

Lets start with the waffle. They make a traditional Belgium-style waffle called a Liege. The Liege waffle is made from dough so it tends to be a touch sweeter and chewier. This is not the waffle most restaurants serve in the U.S., which are made from a batter and are called “Brussels” waffles. This is only my second time eating a Liege waffle but I really like the crunchy exterior and chewy interior texture of it.

Waffles de Liege offers a number of different toppings like Nutella, chocolate, caramel, whipped cream and fresh fruit like bananas and strawberries. You also have the option to top your waffle with Fosselman’s Ice Cream. The ice cream is hand-made in LA and the truck carries several flavors at a time. There are no preservatives and it was extremely fresh.

Liege waffle with Bananas, Chocolate-covered Strawberry Ice Cream, Powdered Sugar & Chocolate

Kim and I tried a couple of their waffles and ice cream combinations, a waffle with bananas, chocolate-covered strawberry ice cream dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with chocolate syrup and one with fresh cut bananas, French Vanilla ice cream, powered sugar and Speculoos. We enjoyed the Speculoos the most. Speculoos is a spread that looks like peanut butter but tastes like a Belgian “biscuit” or cookie. That is because it is basically a gingerbread cookie turned into a spread. You have to try it. It is a great complement to the waffles.

Fresh Cut Bananas, French Vanilla Ice Cream, Powered Sugar and Speculoos

I have a feeling Waffles de Liege is going to become very popular. Being new, they still have a few kinks to work out. Consistency was the only complaint I heard. One of the ones we tried from a friend was over cooked but the ice cream softened it up , so it was not a huge issue. The two we ordered were perfectly cooked so I am confident that they will straighten this out soon. I wonder if they would consider expanding their menu to include savory waffles in the future?

Check out this article about the article featuring Supervisor Janice Rutherford who is trying to lift the ban HERE. The one-day festival is a solution to provide an experience many people have only heard about.

The IE Food Truck Fest is meant to showcase the delectable cuisine that has rolled out on our SoCal streets in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. With a diverse mix of 50 gourmet food trucks gathered at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, the community can experience several epicurean delights all at one location.
