Event Wrap-up: Long Beach Street Food Festival – July 9, 2011

Rolled in Early to the Fest

This past weekend was another amazing Long Beach Street Food Fest. Once again the organizers knocked it out of the park. Kim and I along with other food friends, Kelly (@DP_SNFoodies), Austin (@FuzzDogg66), Jane (@YellowCat13) and Dan (@GourmetFoodTrk) grubbed our way through a ton of trucks. There was so much incredible food being served and this venue is always relaxing. Imagine kicking back under a tree next to the harbor, with a beer in your hand while stuffing your face with some of the best food available in southern California. Yep, that was me on Saturday!

Cocktail Recipe: Inspired by The Tory Burch Electric Eel

Electric "Tequila" Eel

Kim and I (mostly Kim) have been working on different cocktails in the “Test Kitchen” for some time now. I think it is time to start sharing some of them with you. The first was inspired by a recipe found on the Tory Burch Blog.  Actually, our friend Kelly (@dp_snfoodies) found it there.  Like any other recipe I get my hands on, I had to tweak it to my own liking.  In this case I changed the alcohol and the amount of one key ingredient.

Here is the recipe (My Tequila Version):

  • 8 fresh sage leaves (muddled)
  • 2oz pineapple juice
  • 3/4oz simple syrup
  • 1/2oz lemon juice
  • 2oz good tequila (I used a nice Anejo “Costco Kirkland” – Yum!)

Shake and strain into a tumbler over ice.  Garnish with a sage leaf.

Here is the recipe (Kim & Kelly’s  Vodka Version):

  • 6 fresh sage leaves (muddled)
  • 2oz pineapple juice
  • 3/4oz simple syrup
  • 1/2oz lemon juice
  • 2oz good tequila (They used Grey Goose)

Shake and strain into a martini glass.  Garnish with a sage leaf.

This is the first of hopefully many drink recipes from our Test Kitchen.  If you have any ideas you would like to share or have us play with, please send them to me at  jason@saturdaynightfoodies.com

Eat your way through the first-ever Munchathon, a food-themed fun run and obstacle course featuring local food and beverage vendors, which takes place at Oak Canyon Park, near Irvine Lake, on July 16. The event will have two major elements: the 5K run/walk with food/beverage stops and food-themed challenges, and a festival of dozens of gourmet food trucks.

This event was designed for those of you who love food, follow more gourmet food trucks than actual people on Twitter, dash to your favorite restaurant despite your non-existent lunch break, devour whatever might be in arms reach at that very moment and consider yourself the ultimate foodie.

You will encounter obstacles and have several stops where you will have the opportunity to eat sample-size food items from gourmet food trucks and other vendors. You can also expect beverage stops along the course as well. Get a team together or go solo, dress up as bananas or hot dogs or piggies–whatever gets you pumped–and bring your appetite. After the run, participants will have access to a festival of gourmet food trucks, beverages, entertainment, vendors and lots more.

We only have TWO RULES for all attendees and they are…

DASH & DEVOUR.

Only the ones with the strongest appetites will survive.

Munchathon is open to all ages. The 5K fun run goes from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Early admission to the festival is from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and general admission starts at 11 a.m. The event ends at 5 p.m.

Event Wrap-up: 33rd Annual "A Taste of Greece"

Kim and I have talked about going to the annual Taste of Greece, at the Saint Paul’s Greek Orthodox Church for a number of years but never did. This year we had no excuse thanks to Mona Shah of Moxxe PR (@Moxxe) and Executive Chef George Kookootsedes. They put together an amazing spread of food, desserts and drink for a few of the local food bloggers. We were lucky enough to be asked to join in on the tummy-stuffing fun.

The Greek Festival is very laid back and relaxing. The food is prepared by an all volunteer team and it takes months to get prepped for this three day event. Most of the food is cooked right before you order it and you can hang out and watch if you like.

Saganaki - Fried Greek Cheese Flamed with Brandy

We will for sure go back. If you do not know much about Greek cuisine this would be a great place to test your palette. Here are some photos from the event:
