What is a malasada you ask? Well, it is a pillow of love sent down from the Hawaiian Gods. Actually, it is the Hawaiian version of a donut sans the hole in the middle. It is a chunk of dough fried and tossed with sugar, cinnamon and sugar or Li hing sugar (dried plum – an Hawaiian dessert seasoning). What makes Leonard’s special is that they make malasadas fresh all day, so you will get one straight out of the fryer when you order. They are crunchy on the outside but so light and fluffy on the inside. It’s difficult to eat just one!
This is a must try when visiting Oahu. Try the original location in Kaimuki on Kapahulu or one of the carts located on various spots around the island.
